**Dutch Government Faces Turmoil Amidst Resignation and Football Violence Controversy**

The Dutch government narrowly avoided a complete collapse Friday night in the wake of football-related violence and a minister's resignation over alleged racist remarks by fellow Cabinet members. Speculations about the government's potential downfall were rampant, but only Nora Achahbar, a state secretary from the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) party within the finance ministry, decided to step down. The resignation, effective Friday night, leaves the fragile right-wing coalition intact, for now.

The coalition, composed of the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), the center-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and the NSC, has been under strain. Concerns loomed that other NSC ministers might follow Achahbar's lead, threatening the coalition's stability. However, multiple Dutch media sources confirm the coalition retains enough seats to remain in power.

Achahbar announced her resignation earlier on Friday, citing offensive remarks made by other ministers during a Cabinet meeting on Monday. The meeting was initially convened to address the violence in Amsterdam involving locals and Israeli football fans the previous week. Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that Achahbar's decision was driven by these comments.

In her public statement post-crisis meeting, she expressed her dismay: "With pain in my heart I have to announce today that I will not continue this task." Achahbar emphasized her initial goal of entering the coalition to "restore justice, humanity, and trust within the government." However, the "polarizing attitudes of the past few weeks" took a heavy toll, making her position untenable.

Leading the Dutch government since July, Prime Minister Dick Schoof's coalition is the most right-wing in the nation's history. But internal disputes have emerged, particularly regarding last week's Amsterdam violence. The unrest saw Maccabi Tel Aviv fans dismantle Palestinian flags and engage in anti-Arab chants, escalating tensions.

Outspoken anti-immigrant PVV leader Geert Wilders, although not a government member, has been vocally critical of the Cabinet's response, demanding severe actions against the perpetrators, reportedly Arabs and Muslims. While the PVV, VVD, and BBB endorsed a proposal to revoke the Dutch citizenship of those involved in antisemitic violence, the more moderate NSC has withheld its support for such measures.

As the coalition grapples with these internal and external pressures, it remains uncertain how long it can sustain its precarious hold on power.
