According to a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll, more Americans hold former President Donald Trump responsible for the risk of politically motivated violence in the country compared to President Joe Biden. The poll also revealed a rise in Trump's favorability rating while a majority of Americans expressed dissatisfaction with Biden's performance and called for him to drop out of the race.

Trump's favorability rating reached its highest point in four years of ABC News/Ipsos polling, with 40% of Americans viewing him positively following a week that included an assassination attempt on his life and the Republican National Convention. In contrast, 51% of respondents held an unfavorable view of Trump. In August 2020, Trump's favorability was at its peak at 42%, according to a previous ABC News/Washington Post poll.

Meanwhile, President Biden's favorability rating stands at 32%, lower than Trump's, with 55% having an unfavorable view of the current president. This rating has remained relatively stable over the past year. The poll also revealed that among Democrats, 60% believe Biden should drop out of the race, while slightly more Republicans (44%) support Biden's continuation as the Democratic nominee.

The sentiment of dissatisfaction with Biden as the nominee was echoed by more than half (55%) of the American public, whereas 58% of Democrats expressed satisfaction with him as their party's candidate. Interestingly, 15% of respondents held unfavorable views of both Trump and Biden, indicating a segment of the population with mixed opinions on the two candidates.

When it comes to unifying the country, Americans expressed greater trust in Trump's ability compared to Biden. The poll showed a seven-point margin, with 38% of respondents trusting Trump and 31% trusting Biden. However, more Americans (46%) blamed Trump for the risk of politically motivated violence, while only 27% pointed to Biden.

The poll also assessed potential replacement candidates for Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the most favorable option with a 35% favorability rating. However, other candidates such as Andy Beshear, Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom, JB Pritzker, Josh Shapiro, and Gretchen Whitmer were found to be less well-known even among Democrats.

Finally, the poll introduced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as Trump's nominee for vice president. Vance received a 25% favorability rating, with 31% expressing unfavorable views and 43% stating they lacked sufficient knowledge or had no opinion about him.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,141 U.S. adults from July 19-20, 2024, and had a margin of sampling error of 3.1 points. The partisan divisions within the sample were 31% Democrats, 29% Republicans, and 30% independents.

As the 2024 presidential race continues, the dynamics of public opinion and voter sentiment remain crucial factors in shaping the candidates' campaigns and strategies.
