**American Water Suffers Cybersecurity Breach, Takes Immediate Response Measures**
American Water, the leading regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States, reported on Tuesday that it experienced a cybersecurity breach. According to the New Jersey-based company, it detected "unauthorized activity" in their computer networks and systems last Thursday, and subsequently confirmed it as a cyberattack.
Upon identifying the issue, American Water immediately activated their incident response protocols and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to help contain and mitigate the situation. The company also launched an investigation into the incident's scope and impact. Additionally, law enforcement was notified, and the utility is fully cooperating with the authorities.
As a precautionary measure, American Water took its customer portal offline and temporarily halted billing activities. However, the company assured the public that so far, none of their water or wastewater facilities or operations have been adversely affected.
Founded in 1886, American Water provides drinking water and wastewater services to over 14 million people across 14 states and 18 military facilities. The company manages upwards of 500 water and wastewater systems in around 1,700 communities, including those in California, Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
The investigation into the cyberattack is ongoing and is expected to take some time to conclude.
