In an impressive feat for an indie studio, Alex Garland's dystopian political action film "Civil War" continues to dominate the weekend box office with a second weekend gross of $11 million. The film, distributed by A24, has now amassed a healthy domestic total of $45 million, successfully captivating audiences from both blue and red states.

Facing a tougher challenge than anticipated, Universal's "Abigail" was expected to give "Civil War" a run for its money. However, the new vampire flick opened with a respectable but underwhelming $10.2 million. With a modest budget of $28 million before marketing expenses, "Abigail" managed to hold its ground as a studio film.

Internationally, horror films often struggle to find their footing, and this was evident with "Abigail," which only generated $5 million from 62 markets. As a result, the global debut of the film reached a mere $15.2 million. Directed by the talented duo known as Radio Silence, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who were previously involved in the successful reboot of the "Scream" franchise and horror hit "Ready or Not," "Abigail" tells the chilling tale of a group of criminals kidnapping a 12-year-old ballerina who also happens to be a vampire.

On another front, the battle between Warner Bros. and Legendary's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" continued in its fourth weekend, adding $9.8 million to its already impressive box office haul. The film has now crossed the $170 million mark domestically and an astonishing $485.2 million globally, including a remarkable $119 million in China. Additionally, Legendary and Warners' "Dune: Part Two" is on the verge of surpassing $700 million at the global box office, solidifying its success.

Meanwhile, Universal and DreamWorks Animation's beloved family film franchise, "Kung Fu Panda 4," persisted in its seventh outing, amassing $4.6 million and maintaining a dazzling domestic total of $179.9 million. The animated flick also surpassed $300 million overseas, adding to its impressive global cume of $480.3 million.

In terms of the overall box office performance, the weekend proved to be somewhat sluggish for the U.S. film industry. Year-to-date revenue fell nearly 20 percent behind last year, representing a significant 33 percent drop from 2019. Comparisons to previous weekends were even more disheartening, as the same weekend in 2023 witnessed the opening of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie." The industry is eagerly awaiting the arrival of summer, hoping for a much-needed boost in ticket sales and market recovery.
