In a recently surfaced video, Alec Baldwin can be seen engaging in a confrontation at a coffee shop in New York City. The clip shows Baldwin being approached by performance artist Crackhead Barney, known for ambush-style interviews, who repeatedly asks the actor to say "free Palestine" and references the tragic Rust shooting incident.
The incident took place at Maman cafe in Greenwich Village, where Baldwin was captured holding his cell phone up to his ear. Crackhead Barney can be heard asking Baldwin to utter the phrase "free Palestine" once, while also mentioning the legal case surrounding the death of Baldwin's Rust movie cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins was fatally shot when a prop gun held by Baldwin discharged a live round.
As Crackhead Barney persistently raises the issue, Baldwin approaches the cafe's door and urges the artist to leave. He also requests the staff to contact the police. In response, Crackhead Barney continues to press Baldwin, demanding that he say "free Palestine" and expressing strong sentiments against Israel and Zionism.
The video concludes with Baldwin swiftly swatting away the camera just as he asks for a "quick favor."
The incident stirred controversy, with Crackhead Barney & Friends X account alleging in a caption that Baldwin attacked them while they were trying to get coffee. However, the community note appended to the video refuted this claim, stating that the person filming had relentlessly harassed Baldwin and refused to leave the establishment when asked to do so.
Crackhead Barney later released a statement through their publicist, explaining that their confrontational media and performance art aims to highlight societal double standards in the United States. They criticize the entertainment industry's silence and alleged support for Israel amid growing calls for Palestinian liberation and an end to US support for Israel.
Both Alec Baldwin's representatives and Maman cafe have been reached out to for comment, while the trial for involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin is set to take place in July. The armorer for Rust, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has already been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the tragic incident.
The incident has once again shone a spotlight on the ongoing debate surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the entertainment industry's role in such discussions.
