In a turn of events, liberal actor Robert De Niro will no longer be receiving the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Leadership Foundation's Service to America Award. The prestigious accolade was revoked by the NAB after De Niro made an anti-Trump tirade outside the former president's criminal trial in Manhattan this week.
The NAB was initially planning to honor De Niro with the award next week, but the association decided to rescind it following his attendance at a Biden-Harris press conference, where he condemned former President Trump as a "danger" to Americans. De Niro accused Trump of wanting to destroy both New York City and the nation.
An NAB spokesperson clarified the decision, highlighting the purpose of the event being to celebrate the impactful work of local broadcasters and their partners, emphasizing bipartisan unity. While the spokesperson affirmed the right to free speech and civic engagement, they expressed concern that De Niro's recent activities would divert attention from the philanthropic work the award aimed to recognize.
De Niro, who faced vocal opposition from protesters during the press conference, firmly stated that Trump did not "belong" in New York City. He rallied supporters to vote for Joe Biden, believing it was the only way to protect freedoms and preserve humanity.
Following De Niro's remarks, chaos ensued as he was heckled by Trump supporters while leaving the podium. A shouting match broke out between De Niro and a man wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, who labeled him a "washed-up actor."
It is worth noting that President Biden and Vice President Harris were not present during the event. Trump took to social media to criticize De Niro, calling him "pathetic" and a "wacko."
Reacting to the news that he no longer would receive the NAB award, De Niro expressed his support for the NAB Leadership Foundation's work and conveyed his appreciation for their efforts. While disappointed, he wished the Foundation continued success in their endeavors.
The NAB Leadership Foundation refrained from providing further comment on the situation at the time of this writing.
The revocation of the NAB award reflects the contentious political climate surrounding the former president. It also highlights how public figures' outspoken opinions can occasionally lead to consequences concerning their professional recognition.
