In a move that has sparked yet another controversy surrounding Donald J. Trump's presidential campaign, Universal Music has sent an official legal notice to the campaign team, demanding the immediate removal of ABBA songs used without permission to promote the former president's 2024 election candidacy.
Universal Music, on behalf of ABBA, expressed their disappointment upon discovering that videos featuring ABBA's music have been utilized at Trump events. The label stated that no permission or license had been granted to Trump or his campaign by Universal Music Publishing AB and Polar Music International AB.
The issue of musicians objecting to their work being used by politicians is not new. In fact, both Celine Dion and Foo Fighters have publicly rejected the use of their songs, "My Heart Will Go On" and "My Hero," respectively, at Trump rallies. While the ability of artists to halt the usage of their music at political events remains a subject of debate, past cases suggest that legal action, such as threats from the Rolling Stones and others, often puts an end to such unauthorized use.
At the time of this article's publication, the Trump campaign has not provided any comment or response to ABBA's statement.
The clash between musicians and political campaigns over unauthorized song use continues to raise questions about copyright infringement and artist control over their work. As the 2024 election season progresses, artists are likely to remain vigilant in asserting their rights, underscoring the importance of obtaining proper licenses and permissions for music used in political arenas.
