In a shocking turn of events, a 74-year-old woman, identified as Ann Mayers, allegedly attempted to rob a credit union in Ohio on April 19. According to the Fairfield Township Police Department, Mayers entered AurGroup Credit Union, demanding money while displaying a handgun. Police were called to the scene at 1:29 p.m. local time, and images of the suspect were shared online in hopes of identifying her.

Later that day, police located Mayers at her residence in Hamilton, Ohio, and arrested her at 3 p.m. The police department revealed that Mayers admitted to the crime. Although Mayers had no known criminal history, Sergeant Brandon McCroskey of the Fairfield Township police disclosed that she had fallen victim to an online scam, losing thousands of dollars. McCroskey, however, noted that the nature of the scam has not been confirmed by the police.

During the robbery, Mayers took only $500 from the credit union. McCroskey revealed that Mayers had recently discussed the idea of robbing a bank with her sister, though her sister did not take her seriously. At the time of her arrest, Mayers was found in possession of a loaded handgun in her 2014 silver Hyundai Elantra, the car she had used during the robbery.

As a result of her actions, Mayers has been charged with aggravated robbery with a firearm and tampering with evidence, both serious offenses. The police department considers the aggravated robbery charge as a first-degree felony. Mayers was booked into Butler County Jail on the same day, shortly after 7 p.m., and is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

The case has raised questions about the motivations behind Mayers' alleged crime, with her family attributing it to her desperation following the online scam incident. The investigation into the online scam and Mayers' possible involvement in it is still ongoing.

As this story continues to unfold, it prompts reflection on the potential dangers and consequences of falling victim to online scams and the impact it can have on individuals, regardless of age. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and vigilant when engaging in online transactions to avoid falling prey to such fraudulent schemes.
