In a shocking incident that unfolded near Garfield High School in Seattle, a 17-year-old male student was shot in the school's parking lot during lunchtime. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is currently investigating the incident as authorities work to piece together what led to the tragic shooting.

According to a statement released by Seattle Public Schools, the shooting took place on Thursday near 23rd Ave. and E. Alder St. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving everyone devastated.

SPD Assistant Chief Eric Barden expressed his grief, stating, "This is an extraordinary tragedy for our community. It's our collective responsibility to take care of our young people, our youth, and unfortunately, gun violence emerged again today at our high school, and we have a victim right now at Harborview."

Following the shooting, Garfield High School was immediately put on lockdown, and nearby Nova and Washington Middle School were placed on shelter-in-place. Seattle Police secured the premises, working closely with the district's Safety and Security team to ensure the safety of the students.

During a lockdown, all classroom and exterior doors are locked, and students are instructed to remain indoors until given the clearance to leave. A shelter-in-place procedure involves locking the outside doors while normal school activities continue.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and SPD Interim Chief Sue Rahr addressed the media during a press conference held just hours after the incident. The lockdown lasted approximately two hours before it was lifted at 3:15 p.m. Seattle Public Schools promptly provided information about a designated reunification site for parents and students.

As the investigation remains active, law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. SPD has set up a Violent Crime Tip Line at (206) 233-5000 for this purpose. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or through the P3 Tips app on smartphones.

This incident serves as a reminder of the pressing issue of gun violence, highlighting the importance of collective efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of young individuals within our communities.
