In a shocking and heartbreaking case, a 12-year-old girl tragically lost her life after enduring months of torment, resulting in her emaciated and broken state. Two individuals, identified as Rendell Hoagland, 52, and his girlfriend Cindy Warren, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The distressing incident came to light on May 4, when Hoagland called 911 to report that his daughter, Malinda Hoagland, was unconscious and unresponsive, according to Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe. Medical staff at the hospital discovered Malinda covered in bruises, with several broken bones, organ failure, and weighing only 50 pounds. Despite efforts to save her, she tragically passed away during treatment.

During the investigation, de Barrena-Sarobe revealed that Hoagland and Warren subjected Malinda to unimaginable levels of cruelty and abuse for months. Malinda was removed from her middle school and enrolled in an online homeschooling program sometime between late November and early December. Despite having to appear on camera for school, nobody was aware of the horrific treatment she was enduring.

The investigating officials also uncovered a cell phone containing numerous videos of Malinda being abused over an extended period. Some recordings depicted her shackled to furniture, enduring verbal abuse, and being forced to perform strenuous exercises as punishment. Additionally, food was withheld as a means of punishment, and at times, she was shackled in the basement despite having a bedroom.

De Barrena-Sarobe expressed the collective concern of wondering when was the last time Malinda experienced love and care, underscoring the unimaginable circumstances she had endured. The authorities highlighted that Malinda's access to the outside world was severely limited after her withdrawal from school. However, another 9-year-old child residing in the home was reportedly unharmed and well-treated.

Hoagland and Warren were apprehended on May 7 and now face charges of attempted murder, along with other charges including aggravated assault of a child and kidnapping. Both individuals were granted a $1 million cash bail. Pending the review of medical reports, officials are considering the possibility of upgrading the charges to include murder.

No information regarding legal representation for Hoagland and Warren is currently available in court records.

The tragic case of Malinda Hoagland highlights the urgent need for vigilance in ensuring the safety and well-being of children in our communities. As the investigation continues, authorities are committed to bringing justice for Malinda and to preventing such heinous acts from occurring again in the future.
