In a shocking turn of events, a woman from Deep River, Connecticut has been charged with 55 counts of animal cruelty after a painstaking months-long investigation conducted by state police. The Tri-Town Regional Animal Control received a complaint in April 2023 regarding barking dogs at a residence located on Bushy Hill Road.

When animal control officers arrived at the scene, they encountered the homeowner who claimed to breed dogs and possess a valid kennel license. State police reported that while the dogs appeared alert and responsive, they had abnormally oily coats, raising concerns about their well-being.

Over the following months, animal control officers attempted multiple mandatory kennel checks at the property, but the homeowner consistently denied them entry. Then, on January 3, 2024, a veterinary hospital contacted animal control to report the tragic death of a dog allegedly owned by the same individual. The dog had succumbed to severe medical conditions, leading to suspicions of neglect.

In response to this distressing development, Deep River police, in collaboration with animal control officers, obtained a search warrant for the home on January 10. Inside, they discovered deplorable and unsanitary conditions that rendered the residence unsuitable for housing animals. Furthermore, authorities noticed that the dogs did not have adequate access to food or water, with some exhibiting matted and unclean fur.

Acting swiftly, another search warrant was executed on January 25, resulting in the seizure of 43 dogs, along with three hens and one rooster found inside the property. An additional eight hens were also found on the premises. These animals were subsequently examined by a veterinarian and have been relocated to various animal control facilities, ensuring their safety and care.

The homeowner now faces a staggering 55 counts of cruelty to animals, highlighting the severity of the alleged offenses. She is scheduled to appear in court on February 8th, where the charges against her will be addressed. This tragic case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to protect animals from any form of mistreatment.

Authorities will continue to investigate this incident thoroughly, striving for justice and the welfare of the animals impacted by this distressing situation.
