The WBZ-TV Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather Alert for Boston, anticipating wintry conditions and a potential snowfall on Tuesday. After a relatively mild and wet January, Massachusetts is about to experience a significant change in temperatures over the next 7-to-10 days.

With the exception of a snowstorm on January 7th, winter has been largely absent from the region. The first half of January saw only one day with below average temperatures. In fact, Boston is currently experiencing its fifth warmest January on record.

However, a major cold outbreak that has affected parts of the Midwest is heading towards Massachusetts, bringing an end to the above average temperature streak. The drop in temperature will be accompanied by a storm system passing south of New England on Monday night and Tuesday, resulting in a wintry day for parts of the area.

Meteorologists predict that there may be some light snow or flurries occurring after midnight, particularly in areas south of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Although little to no accumulation is expected before dawn on Tuesday, there might be a dusting of snow in certain areas, potentially causing slippery travel conditions during the morning commute.

As the storm comes closer on Tuesday, the snowfall will intensify and become light to moderate later in the morning hours. However, some slightly milder air will simultaneously move in over southeast Massachusetts and the immediate coastline, leading to a change in the precipitation from snow to a mix of rain by the afternoon.

The storm is expected to move quickly out to sea later in the day, with precipitation tapering off during the late afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday.

Boston residents should also note that another storm system is forecasted to potentially impact the area on Friday. Similar to the upcoming Tuesday storm, this system may be weaker and farther south, limiting the possibility of significant snowfall in the region. However, the situation will require monitoring over the next 24-to-48 hours to determine if there will be any changes or potential impacts.

As winter finally makes its presence felt in Boston, residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions and prepare accordingly for wintry weather and possible commuting challenges.
