Portland, Oregon - The city of Portland is experiencing severe winter weather, resulting in the closure of 44 roads, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). As of January 15, there were 42 closed roads, all of which were affected by downed trees or power lines.
The affected roads include SE Thorburn St., SE Woodstock Blvd., SW 47th Ave., SW 39th Dr., SW Fairmount Blvd., SE 135th Avenue, SW 53rd Avenue, SW Patton Rd., SW Scholls Ferry Rd., NE 74th Ave, S Aventine Ave., NW Cornell Rd., SE 172nd St., NW Miller Rd., SE Harney, SE 157th Ave., SW Canyon Ct., SE 72nd, SW Boones Ferry Rd., SE Yamhill Street, SW Cameron Road, SE 92nd Ave, SE 76th Ave, SW 54th Ave, NE 154th Ave, NE 150th Ave, SW 37th Ave, SW Lesser Road, NE Hassalo St, SW Fischer Lane, NE Tillamook St, SW Marquam Hill Road, SW Sam Jackson Park Road, SW Spring St, SW Humphrey Blvd, SE Taylor Street, SW Skyline Blvd, SW Martha Street, NE Flanders Street, NW Skyline Blvd, and NE Holman Street.
The PBOT emphasized that roads not affected by fallen trees and power lines have been well-treated and plowed, making them safe for vehicles with front-wheel drive. However, caution is still advised, as side streets that have not been treated may remain slippery due to snow.
The bureau is urging residents to take advantage of the current conditions and run any essential errands today, as an incoming storm predicted for tomorrow could further worsen road conditions. The storm is expected to bring freezing rain and wind, which may cause additional disruptions.
PBOT is working in collaboration with Urban Forestry-Portland Parks & Recreation and Portland General Electric to remove fallen trees and restore power lines along emergency and priority snow routes. Bikers are advised to be cautious of sand and gravel on the roads, as these materials are necessary for maintaining accessibility for first responders.
The bureau expressed gratitude to the community for their support and cooperation during these challenging times. They acknowledged the hard work, dedication, and bravery of the crews working in dangerous conditions to clear the roads. PBOT encourages residents to continue staying home as much as possible, allowing the crews the space they need to carry out their work efficiently.
As the city of Portland prepares for the incoming storm, residents are reminded to stay updated on road conditions and advisories and to exercise caution if travel is necessary. The PBOT will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as the winter weather persists.
