A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for a portion of the North Carolina and Virginia mountains starting Tuesday night and continuing through Wednesday. The advisory includes Ashe and Watauga Counties in North Carolina, as well as Grayson County, Virginia, and will be in effect from 7:00 p.m. Tuesday to 4:00 p.m. Friday.
According to the latest forecast, a cold and fast-moving storm system is expected to track through the Ohio Valley towards Virginia and the Carolinas. Clouds will begin to increase in the western areas of the region early Tuesday afternoon, followed by scattered rain showers a few hours later. The rainfall is expected to be spotty and limited.
As temperatures drop on Tuesday evening, the rain showers will gradually change to flurries and snow showers. Occasional snow showers are likely overnight and into Wednesday morning. Higher peaks with slopes facing the northwest can expect more snow accumulation, with some areas receiving as much as two to three inches. In most communities, however, snowfall is anticipated to be limited, ranging from a trace to an inch.
Winds will start to increase late Tuesday night, with gusts reaching as high as 30-45 mph on Wednesday morning. As a result, the wind chill temperature is predicted to drop into the twenties for much of Wednesday, and may even fall as low as the upper teens.
The potential for hazardous travel conditions is a concern, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute. Heavier bursts of snow could lead to slippery roads, increasing the likelihood of delays for mountain county schools.
Despite the blustery and cold weather conditions on Wednesday, sunshine is expected to return on Thursday, helping to improve temperatures and any lingering travel issues.
Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecast and news by downloading the WXII app. It is important to take precautions during this Winter Weather Advisory period, including dressing warmly, being cautious on the roads, and staying informed of any school delays or closures.
