Powerful winter storm systems are causing widespread destruction and chaos across the United States, with several states declaring a state of emergency in response to the severe weather conditions. Governors in Arkansas, Colorado, New York, and Louisiana have already taken this step to protect their residents.

According to PowerOutage.us, as of Saturday afternoon, around 350,000 customers were without power in multiple states. Michigan was the hardest hit, experiencing the largest share of outages. However, significant portions of Wisconsin, Oregon, New York, and Vermont were also affected, leaving thousands without electricity.

The impact of the winter storms is not limited to power outages. In Iowa, where the Republican presidential candidates are gearing up for Monday's caucuses, a snowstorm has disrupted campaign events. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis postponed four events on Friday after campaigning in-person north of Des Moines earlier in the day. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and former President Donald Trump shifted their Iowa events online, with Trump expressing his intention to try and make it to the state by late Saturday night.

In New York, the severe weather forced the rescheduling of the Buffalo Bills' home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers from Sunday to Monday. Additionally, coastal flooding remains a threat for the state after a night of heavy rain. New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut could potentially experience up to 2.5 feet of flooding near the waterfront and shoreline, posing a risk to buildings, roads, parking lots, and basements.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for parts of New Jersey, including Mercer, Gloucester, Camden, Northwestern Burlington, and parts of Pennsylvania, such as Delaware, Philadelphia, and Lower Bucks. Forecasters warn that buildings and roads in these areas are at risk of flooding damage, and some roadways may become impassable.

Further north, upstate New York and Vermont brace for knee-high snowfall and strong winds throughout the weekend. Accumulations of 1 to 3 feet of snow are expected across Oswego, Watertown, and Lowville in New York. In Vermont, cities like South Colton and Star Lake may see between 6 to 18 inches of snow.

As the winter storm pushes southward, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas are facing frigid temperatures along with snow, sleet, and freezing rain until Sunday. The NWS warned of dangerously low temperatures and wind chills persisting into midweek.

Texas, particularly north and central regions, anticipates temperatures to fall significantly below freezing. Some parts of northwest Texas are expected to reach single digits, with Montague, Cooke, Grayson, Young, Jack, and Wise counties facing "life-threatening" cold temperatures on Saturday night through Sunday morning.

In Arkansas, brutally cold conditions are expected to continue into mid-week, with Tuesday bringing the coldest morning. The state may receive about half a foot or less of snow this weekend, but the real concern lies on Tuesday, as temperatures in parts of northern Arkansas could drop as low as -2°F. The NWS issued a warning about frostbite and advised residents to have spare generators at home.

Northern Mississippi, including Jackson and Yazoo City, will also experience freezing temperatures, increasing the risk of frostbite or hypothermia due to prolonged exposure. Additionally, pipes exposed to the cold may be at risk of damage.

Tennessee, particularly west and middle regions, is under a winter storm watch from late Sunday to Tuesday morning. The city of Memphis will witness its last day above freezing temperatures until Thursday, as forecasters predict 4-6 inches of snowfall by Tuesday. Nashville can expect 2-4 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall occurring on Monday.

Other states are also bracing for severe winter weather. Oregon, southern Idaho, northern Utah, and northern Nevada are under a winter storm watch, with the potential for heavy snowfall. In Idaho, there is a 20% chance of over 10 inches of snowfall in Boise. Freezing rain in northwest Oregon could cause damage to trees and power lines.

Northern California, specifically parts of the state, is under a flood watch until Saturday night. Eureka is expected to receive between 2 to 4 inches of rain in coastal areas and valleys, with higher elevations predicted to receive 5 to 8 inches. The excessive rainfall raises concerns about minor flooding and mudslides.

As winter storms continue to batter various regions across the country, it is essential for residents to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and heed warnings from local authorities to ensure their safety and well-being.
