The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for several counties in Alabama, as the state braces for the arrival of the coldest temperatures of the winter season. Forecasters are predicting the potential for snow and ice, which could lead to treacherous travel conditions and bitterly cold temperatures next week.
According to the forecasters, some areas in Alabama could see between 1 to 4 inches of snow, with the northwest region expected to experience the most accumulation. Additionally, there is a concern for ice accumulations in certain parts of the state.
The winter storm watch encompasses several counties in north Alabama, including Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Jackson, Marion, and Winston. The watch will be in effect from late Sunday night through late Monday night and Monday morning through late Monday night for Marion and Winston counties.
Travel is likely to be affected by the frozen precipitation, with hazardous conditions persisting into Wednesday or Thursday in areas that remain below freezing. The weather service also warned of wind chills below zero, especially in north and central Alabama, and low temperatures in the teens extending even to south Alabama.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and make necessary preparations to stay safe in the extreme cold. Spending prolonged time outside could result in hypothermia, and there is a risk of burst pipes due to the frigid temperatures.
The coldest night is expected to be on Tuesday into Wednesday morning, with temperatures falling into the teens nearly statewide. Some areas may not see temperatures rise above freezing until Wednesday afternoon or even Thursday.
Forecasters are closely monitoring another weather system expected to impact Alabama by Thursday night into Friday. However, it is too early to determine potential winter weather concerns for that period as forecast models are currently inconsistent.
As the winter storm watch is in effect, residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this upcoming period of snow, ice, and bitter cold.
