A powerful winter storm is expected to move into New Mexico, bringing heavy snowfall, blizzard-like conditions, and dangerous wind chills. The impacts of the storm are anticipated to be felt as early as Sunday, with the National Weather Service issuing various winter weather alerts across the state.

Northwest New Mexico, including Farmington, Gallup, Chama, and Los Alamos, is under a winter storm warning. Residents in these areas can expect heavy snowfall, with accumulations ranging from 2 to 6 inches in elevations below 7,500 feet and 6 to 12 inches above 7,500 feet. Additionally, strong winds gusting up to 40 mph are forecasted. The heaviest snowfall is predicted to occur on Sunday and Sunday night, making travel conditions difficult in the warned area. The Monday morning commute may also be impacted by blowing snow on roadways.

Northeast New Mexico, encompassing Colfax, Mora, Harding, and Union Counties, is under a winter storm watch from Sunday night to Monday night. Blizzard-like conditions are possible during this period, with snowfall amounts ranging from 1 to 3 inches. Locations near the Raton Pass could receive higher accumulations of 4 to 6 inches. Winds in these areas could reach gusts as high as 70 mph. Travelers along I-25, U.S. Highway 64/87, and U.S. Highway 56 should be prepared for snow-packed and icy roads. Strong crosswinds may create dangerous whiteout conditions, and snow drifts could form in some areas. Power outages and damage to trees and power lines are also possible.

As the storm exits New Mexico on Monday, bitterly cold wind chills are expected to prevail. On Monday morning, wind chills ranging from the teens to below zero are anticipated, with even colder wind chills projected for Tuesday morning.
