The eastern United States is bracing for its first significant winter storm of the year, with winter storm warnings in effect for 13 states from North Carolina to Maine. This weekend, a wide swath of the Northeast is expected to receive 6-12 inches of snow, while higher elevations in New England may see over a foot of snowfall.
While some uncertainty remains regarding snowfall totals in certain regions, Connecticut and eastern Massachusetts could see varying amounts of snow, with some areas receiving significant accumulation while others barely see any. The National Weather Service has issued a warning, stating that heavy, wet snow combined with gusty winds may lead to travel difficulties, power outages, and tree damage across northeast Pennsylvania through much of southern and central New England. Additionally, minor flooding along the Mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts is possible during Sunday morning's high tide cycle due to gusty onshore winds.
The winter storm has been making its way across the country over the past few days, bringing heavy rain to the south and several inches of snow to states like Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. By early Saturday afternoon, the storm is projected to move through the Mid-Atlantic, potentially causing a brief wintry mix before changing to rain in cities such as Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.
As the day progresses, the New York City area is expected to experience snowfall starting around 5 p.m. ET, with a chance of moderate to heavy snow before transitioning to a wintry mix of snow and rain. By 8 p.m. ET, conditions are expected to deteriorate in parts of New England as the snow intensifies. Although this storm is not classified as a blizzard, low visibility could pose issues for drivers, and caution is advised.
Snowfall is predicted to continue throughout the night across most of the Northeast. Along coastal areas, the snow may become slushy as it transitions to rain. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated overnight.
On Sunday morning, lingering areas of snow are expected in much of the Northeast. Throughout the day, a few scattered snow showers will gradually taper off. The storm is anticipated to move out of the Northeast by Sunday evening, bringing relief from the wintry conditions.
