In a forecast issued by the National Weather Service (NWS), it has been announced that Alabama is bracing for a winter storm that will bring snow and ice across the state. Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of north and west Alabama, with snowfall expected to begin tonight and last through Tuesday.

The NWS predicts that areas in north and west Alabama could receive up to 5 inches of snow, while parts of central and southwest Alabama may experience a wintry mix including ice. Motorists are being advised to exercise caution due to the potential for slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions. The snow amounts are subject to change, but the NWS warns residents to be prepared for the wintry weather.

In addition to the snow and ice, bitterly cold temperatures are expected to sweep across the state until Wednesday night. The NWS states that lows could drop into the single digits and teens, and wind chills may be even lower. The coldest night is projected to be Tuesday into Wednesday, with single digit lows possible in north Alabama and lows in the teens in south Alabama.

The forecast indicates that areas across northern Alabama could see between 1 to 5 inches of snow, while regions farther south may experience a mix of snow and ice. There is also the possibility of freezing rain and sleet in parts of southwest Alabama. Even a small amount of ice or snow can lead to slippery roads, especially in areas where temperatures remain near or below freezing for an extended period.

The NWS has issued a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory for all of north Alabama starting tonight. Northwest Alabama is predicted to receive the most significant snowfall, with up to 5 inches possible in that region. However, isolated areas may experience even higher accumulations. Southeast portions of the forecast area could be affected by freezing rain and ice due to a warm layer of air above freezing surface temperatures.

The bitterly cold temperatures combined with the wintry precipitation pose potential hazards for residents and travelers. The NWS urges everyone to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
