In response to a severe winter storm that hit the High Country on Sunday morning, multiple highways in Northern Arizona have been closed due to heavy snowfall. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is urging drivers to anticipate longer travel times and to prepare emergency kits before embarking on their journeys.
One of the major closures includes State Route 89A, which is shut down in both directions from Sedona to just south of Flagstaff. ADOT has deployed snowplows to clear the snow, and they estimate that the closure will likely end around 3:30 p.m., as stated on their website az511.gov.
Furthermore, several other highways remain closed as of 2:32 p.m. These include Interstate 40 westbound at milepost 157 in Williams, Interstate 40 westbound at milepost 252 in Winslow, Interstate 40 eastbound at milepost 146 in Ash Fork, State Route 87 northbound at Bush Highway due to winter weather crashes and slide-offs, State Route 87 southbound at milepost 338 in Winslow, State Route 64 in both directions at milepost 243 near Grand Canyon National Park, US 60 eastbound at milepost 255 in Globe, and US 60 westbound in Show Low.
The ADOT snowplows are diligently working on State Route 89A to clear the snow and reopen the highway for safe passage. However, at present, the closure remains in effect in both directions in Sedona between mileposts 375 and 397.
As for State Route 87 northbound at Bush Highway, it is also closed due to winter weather and related incidents. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time for when this highway will reopen.
Motorists are advised to visit az511.gov for real-time traffic information and updates regarding the highway closures. Additionally, ADOT reminds drivers to exercise caution, avoid passing snowplows, reduce speed, and be patient when encountering winter weather conditions on the road.
The closure of these major highways serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and safety during winter storms. It is crucial for drivers to plan ahead, stay informed about road conditions, and take necessary precautions while driving in inclement weather.
Stay tuned for further updates on the highway closures and the reopening of these vital routes in Northern Arizona.
