Winter Storm Brings Snow and Icy Conditions to D.C. Area

As a winter storm sweeps across the East Coast, the D.C. area is bracing itself for snow, sleet, and freezing rain. According to FOX 5's meteorologists, the storm has already begun to impact the region, with areas north of D.C., such as Hagerstown, Martinsburg, Winchester, and Cumberland, experiencing steady snowfall since Saturday morning.
In Frederick County, MD, a mix of sleet and snow flurries was observed throughout the morning, with some accumulation in downtown Frederick. Plow trucks have been deployed in the area to address the icy conditions as the precipitation continues.
FOX 5's Ayesha Khan has reported that snow and sleet are already falling in Frederick County, while Chief Meteorologist Tucker Barnes confirmed the presence of snow flurries in Washington, D.C. at around 10:30 a.m.
Residents in the northern and western outskirts of D.C. can expect to see snow continuing until noon, with higher elevated areas further north experiencing snowfall throughout the day, according to FOX 5 Meteorologist Gwen Tolbart.
Temperatures in the morning were frigid, ranging from the 20s to the 30s. Although temperatures are expected to rise gradually throughout the day in the I-95 corridor, some areas to the northwest will remain below freezing.
Winter Storm Warnings have been issued from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday for Warren County, Carroll County, Frederick County, Washington County, and Berkeley County. However, some counties have been downgraded to a Winter Storm Advisory after transitioning from snow and sleet to rain.
In Maryland, a Snow Emergency Plan is in effect for Garrett County and Allegany County. As a precautionary measure, several schools including Fairfax County Public Schools, Frederick Community College, and Loudoun County Public Schools have announced closures for Saturday.
While snow accumulations vary across the region, residents in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia can expect significant snowfall due to the ongoing winter storm. As the storm progresses, it is important for individuals to exercise caution when traveling and to stay updated on any changes in weather conditions.
