A new winter storm is approaching the southern and eastern United States, bringing with it the potential for more rain, flooding, and even dense fog across several states. As of early Friday, a flood watch is in effect for Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, and New York as heavy rains continue to impact the Midwest and Northeast regions.

The combination of rainfall, snow melt, and ice jams has resulted in numerous flood warnings from Texas to Ohio, with areas such as Lake Charles, Louisiana; New Orleans; Jackson, Mississippi; and Mobile, Alabama, facing the highest threat of floods. Flash flooding is also a concern as the storm system moves into Georgia, the Carolinas, and Tennessee on Saturday, potentially leading to dangerous conditions.

In addition to the heavy rain and flooding risk, there is also the possibility of tornadoes and damaging winds in Alabama and the Florida panhandle. Major cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile in Alabama, and Pensacola in Florida are advised to stay alert for severe weather.

The storm is expected to progress north and east by Saturday night and Sunday, bringing heavy rain to the Interstate 95 corridor, while snowfall is anticipated in Michigan, upstate New York, and New England. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall are forecasted along the I-95 corridor, with more than half a foot of snow possible in upstate New York and New England. Michigan and Ohio may also experience a few inches of snowfall.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest is expected to see an atmospheric river set up, targeting Washington and Oregon. Although the system will bring warm temperatures, which means any snowfall will not affect major interstates and passes, rainfall totals in some areas could reach close to half a foot.

On another note, more than two dozen states, including Texas, the Dakotas, and New Jersey, are currently on alert for dense fog. Visibility has already dropped to less than a quarter of a mile in certain places, potentially causing flight delays at airports. The thick fog is expected to persist into the weekend due to the ongoing mild weather conditions.

As this winter storm moves across the southern and eastern United States, it is crucial for residents in affected areas to stay informed of the changing weather conditions and to follow any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities.
