Residents in northwestern New Jersey woke up to a winter wonderland, as a winter storm brought the region's first significant snowfall in over a year. Wantage, a town in Sussex County, saw a staggering 13 inches of snow, creating picturesque scenes throughout the area.
Shawn Viggiano, a resident of Wantage, expressed his surprise at the amount of snowfall. He had anticipated about 8 inches, but the storm delivered much more. Viggiano made sure to prepare by ensuring his snow blower was in working condition. He even checked his skis and snowshoes, ready to take advantage of the wintry conditions.
Multiple areas in Sussex County, including Sparta, Kittatinny Lake, and Montague Township, recorded between 5 and nearly 11 inches of snow. Reports from the National Weather Service indicated that other counties, including Warren, Morris, Passaic, and Hunterdon, also experienced significant snowfall.
Residents in Wantage took to social media to share photos of snow blowers in action, puppies playing in the snow, and rulers measuring the growing snow accumulation. The local Office of Emergency Management advised that snowfall would continue at a light to moderate rate, with higher accumulation expected in hilly areas.
However, the wintry weather is not over yet. Forecasters now predict another storm threat for New Jersey on Tuesday, which could bring up to 4 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 60 mph. This could lead to potential flooding, worsened by melting snow in certain regions. The New Jersey State Police have urged residents to stay off the roads due to the possibility of icy conditions.
Looking ahead, the National Weather Service's latest update suggests that the incoming inclement weather later in the week will bring mostly rain, rather than snow, to the area. As residents brace for more wintry weather, it is imperative to stay informed and prepared for any further developments.
