In the ongoing border battle between President Joe Biden and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre offered a response to calls for Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard. The calls were made by some Democrats, including Texas Representative Joaquin Castro, who urged Biden to federalize the National Guard if Abbott defies a Supreme Court order regarding the removal of razor wire from the U.S.-Mexico border.

During an interview on CNN, Jean-Pierre emphasized the administration's commitment to addressing the border situation. She stated that the White House has been engaging in discussions with Senate Republicans and Democrats to reach a bipartisan agreement on border policies. However, when asked about potential actions that President Biden might take, Jean-Pierre chose not to comment directly.

The tensions between Biden and Abbott have escalated in recent weeks, with Republicans blaming Biden's immigration approach for the surge in migrants seeking asylum at the border. Texas has taken measures to secure the border by constructing razor wire, prompting legal action from the Biden administration, which argued that the state lacks the legal authority to do so.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of allowing federal officials to remove parts of the barrier, inciting further frustration from Republicans. Governor Abbott responded to the ruling by characterizing the arrival of migrants at the Texas border as an "invasion" and invoking "Texas's constitutional authority to defend and protect itself." He argued that this authority supersedes any conflicting federal statutes, accusing the federal government of breaking a "compact" between the United States and the states.

Representative Joaquin Castro, along with other Democrats, took to social media to support federalizing the Texas National Guard in response to Abbott's actions. Representative Greg Casar echoed Castro's sentiments, emphasizing the need for sole federal control over the National Guard.

Newsweek reached out to Abbott's office for comment, but there has been no response as of now.

The situation at the U.S.-Mexico border remains tense, as both the Biden administration and Governor Abbott stand firm in their positions. The calls for Biden to seize control of the Texas National Guard highlight the increasingly polarized debate surrounding immigration and border security.
