WATERTOWN, New York - City Manager Ken Mix provided an update on the ongoing water restoration efforts in Watertown, assuring residents that progress is being made to resolve the recent water main break crisis. Mix informed the public that testing on the city's water is going well, with the reservoirs gradually being refilled.
Following the water main break last Thursday at Huntington Street and Eastern Boulevard, water supply pipes throughout the city had dried up, prompting immediate action from the city's water department. Crews have been working tirelessly over the weekend to rectify the situation.
In terms of water quality, Mix confirmed that testing on chlorine levels in the water is moving in the right direction, indicating a positive trend. Furthermore, bacterial tests have been conducted at 20 different locations across the water system, with the results expected to be available soon.
Encouraging news came as Mix announced that the city's first reservoir has been refilled, demonstrating significant progress towards restoring the water supply. The anticipated completion of refilling the second reservoir by the end of the night showcases the dedicated efforts of the water department.
City Manager Ken Mix expressed the possibility of lifting the water conservation notice as soon as Monday after discussions with the water department. However, it is important to note that the boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice. The advisory is a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of the public until water quality is fully restored.
For residents still in need of water, the availability of additional pickup times and locations remains uncertain. Bulk water pickup will continue until 5 p.m. today at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, requiring residents to bring their own containers.
Watertown officials remain committed to resolving the water crisis promptly and effectively. Continuous updates will be provided to the public as progress continues, with hopes of lifting the boil water advisory by midweek. Residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and follow recommended guidelines until the situation is fully resolved.
