In a joint statement issued on Saturday, the United States and South Korea have issued a strong warning to North Korea, stating that any nuclear attack against the US or its allies would be considered "unacceptable" and would ultimately lead to the downfall of the Kim Jong Un regime.

The statement, made during the second US-Republic of Korea Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting held in Washington on Friday, emphasized the unwavering commitment of both nations in defending against the growing nuclear threat posed by North Korea. It highlighted that any nuclear attack by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on the Republic of Korea (ROK) or the US would be met with an immediate and resolute counter-response.

"The US side reiterated that any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response," stated the joint statement, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The talks during the NCG meeting focused on nuclear deterrence strategies, with both nations pledging to share valuable insights and enhance planning capabilities in the event of a potential conflict with North Korea. Heightened concerns have emerged as Pyongyang continues to develop and test ballistic missiles that have the capability to reach targets in South Korea, Japan, and even the US mainland.

During the meeting, Kim Tae-hyo, South Korea's deputy national security adviser, expressed the belief that North Korea may conduct a test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile sometime in the upcoming month. Such a missile launch, irrespective of its range, would be perceived as a direct nuclear threat due to its potential to carry a nuclear warhead.

The gravity of the situation has prompted plans for the third NCG meeting, scheduled to be held in Korea next summer. This upcoming meeting will further address the growing concerns over North Korea's nuclear capabilities.

The joint US-South Korean statement reflects the firm resolve of both nations to deter any potential nuclear aggression from North Korea. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community closely watches how this situation will unfold and hopes for a peaceful resolution to ensure regional stability and security.
