The unmanned aircraft systems, identified as one-way attack drones, were neutralized, with no harm caused to the ships in the vicinity or any reported injuries.

This incident reflects an ongoing pattern in the region where Houthi rebels, supported and trained by Iran, have targeted commercial ships using drones and missiles. The US Navy has been actively responding to such attacks, ensuring the safety of its vessels and offering assistance to compromised commercial vessels.

Earlier this month, the USS Carney thwarted three Houthi drones that were headed towards the ship in the southern Red Sea. Moreover, the Carney promptly responded to distress calls from nearby commercial vessels that were under fire from ballistic missiles. Similarly, last month, the USS Thomas Hudner successfully brought down multiple one-way attack drones from Yemen.

In another alarming event, the USS Mason in the Gulf of Aden was targeted by two ballistic missiles, following a distress call from a commercial tanker attacked by five armed individuals believed to be Somali. The US Navy has been proactive in countering these attacks, launching strikes in eastern Syria and Iraq, specifically targeting weapons depots and storage facilities linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its proxy militia groups.

While acknowledging that the drones were heading towards their direction, the US has refrained from explicitly stating that they were specifically targeting the warships. However, the United States views these drones as a significant threat and takes necessary measures to neutralize them.

The Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, have been engaged in a civil war against a Saudi Arabia-backed coalition since 2014. Their activities have intensified in recent months, along with attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria carried out by other Iran-backed groups. These escalations began after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7.

As tensions in the region continue to rise, the US Navy remains vigilant in protecting its interests and responding to threats. International concerns are mounting over the escalation of hostilities, as the situation could potentially impact the security and stability of the region. Further developments will be closely monitored as the US and its allies navigate these challenging circumstances in the Middle East.
