In a recent incident in the Red Sea, a US naval ship successfully intercepted and neutralized multiple Houthi drones after several commercial vessels came under attack. The Pentagon confirmed the incident on Sunday, which coincided with the Yemen-based Houthi rebel group's claim of targeting two Israeli ships in the same area.

The USS Carney, a US naval destroyer, swiftly responded to distress reports from the commercial vessels and successfully thwarted the Houthi drone attacks. The Pentagon released a statement acknowledging the reports of attacks on the USS Carney and commercial vessels in the Red Sea, promising to provide further information as it becomes available.

However, a National Security Council official later stated that preliminary evaluations indicated that only the commercial ships, and not the USS Carney, were specifically targeted. Defense officials believe the attacks were carried out using Houthi missiles, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

During the incident, the USS Carney observed a ballistic missile fired at a civilian commercial ship named the "Unity Explorer" and promptly intervened to aid the distressed vessel. Additionally, the naval destroyer successfully intercepted another Houthi drone that was heading towards itself and the Unity Explorer, thereby preventing further potential damage.

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group released a statement claiming responsibility for the missile and drone attacks. They stated that the targets were two ships they believed were associated with Israel, namely the "Unity Explorer" and the "Number Nine," in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, also known as the Gate of Tears. The Houthi statement did not mention any attacks on US ships, emphasizing their focus on Israeli-affiliated entities.

"The Yemeni armed forces continue to prevent Israeli ships from navigating the Red and Arab Seas until the Israeli aggression against our steadfast brothers in the Gaza Strip stops," the Houthi group asserted. They maintained their stance that all Israeli ships or entities linked to Israel are considered legitimate targets until the conflict in Gaza comes to an end. The rebel group had previously claimed the capture of an Israeli ship in November.

As tensions continue to rise in the region, this latest incident highlights the complex dynamics at play in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The involvement of a US naval ship in neutralizing the Houthi drone attacks underscores the significance of international efforts to maintain stability and security in the Red Sea.

WATCH: Following a brief lull, Israel resumes its offensive in Gaza, intensifying the conflict in the region.
