In a press conference held in Washington on Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern over the allegations that staff members from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) were involved in the October 7 attack on Israel. Blinken stated that the United States would closely examine the steps taken by UNRWA in response to these "deeply troubling" allegations.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Blinken emphasized the need for UNRWA to promptly conduct an investigation, as it had pledged to do. He also called for accountability for those implicated in any wrongdoing and urged the agency to review its existing procedures.

Responding to questions regarding the talks concerning a potential hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, Blinken acknowledged their importance and expressed hopefulness. He mentioned ongoing efforts, in collaboration with Qatar, Egypt, and Israel, to rescue hostages in Gaza and achieve an extended pause in hostilities.

With regards to the proposed deal, Blinken commended the joint efforts of all involved parties, describing it as a strong and compelling proposal that offers hope for resuming the peace process. He refrained from providing further details on the negotiation progress, stating that the less said about it, the better.

As the allegations against UNRWA staff members add another layer of complexity to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the world awaits the outcome of the investigation and subsequent actions taken by the aid agency. The United States, along with its international partners, continues to work towards a peaceful resolution and the safe return of hostages in Gaza.

It remains critical for UNRWA to address these allegations transparently and swiftly, ensuring that the necessary steps are taken to hold accountable those who may be responsible. Only through rigorous examination and improved procedures can the aid agency regain the trust and support necessary to fulfill its vital mission of providing aid and support to Palestinian refugees.
