In a joint effort to counter China's increasing military power in the Asia-Pacific region, the United States and India have announced their partnership to co-produce the highly versatile Stryker armored vehicles. The announcement came during the annual 2+2 ministerial consultations between the countries' foreign and defense ministers, emphasizing the importance of joint development and production of defense equipment.
The goal of this initiative is to strengthen the shared security between the United States and India by diversifying supply chains and enhancing interoperability between their militaries. US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, expressed confidence in this collaboration, stating that it will contribute to the defense capabilities of both countries.
The decision to co-produce Stryker vehicles will significantly aid India in pushing back against China along the disputed border, particularly in the aftermath of a deadly clash in 2020 that claimed lives on both sides. While a majority of these vehicles will be deployed along the China-India border, some will also be stationed along the India-Pakistan border.
India's long-term reliance on Russian weapons will be reduced as a result of this collaboration, thereby expanding their industrial base. Additionally, the Indian government aims to acquire thousands of co-produced vehicles, predominantly armed with anti-tank missile systems. The remaining vehicles will serve purposes such as battlefield surveillance and command vehicles.
The Stryker, manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems Inc., is renowned for its versatility. With over two dozen variants, it is utilized as an infantry carrier, reconnaissance platform, medical support, engineering vehicle, and more. In recent years, the US Army has further equipped the Stryker with a 30mm cannon and has explored integrating directed energy weapons for short-range air defense.
The US-India partnership has reached unprecedented levels, according to Eric Garcetti, the US Ambassador to India. Both countries are committed to expanding their defense-industry ties, including technology sharing for intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance, and advancements in aircraft engines and munitions. Efforts are also being made to streamline regulations, licensing, and export controls, as well as foster stronger collaboration between defense companies.
The collaboration between the United States and India extends beyond co-production of the Stryker vehicles. The two nations plan to conduct more joint exercises across combatant commands and regions, promoting closer military cooperation in the face of shared security challenges.
With this latest development, the US-India partnership continues to grow, presenting a powerful deterrent against potential aggression, while fostering stability and security in the region.
