In a recent development, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani has criticized the United States' airstrikes on facilities used by Hezbollah as a "clear and hostile act." This comes after three American troops were wounded in a terrorist drone strike the day before.
The US airstrikes, which were authorized by President Biden on Christmas Day from Camp David, resulted in the death of "a number of Kataib Hezbollah militants," according to Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, the head of US Central Command.
However, the Iraqi government has expressed its disapproval of the American response, stating that it does not serve the path of long-term common interests and goes against the desire of the US to strengthen relations with Iraq. The prime minister's office highlighted that the strikes harm bilateral relations and represent an unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
Amidst the tensions, the funeral of a deceased terrorist took place, attended by mourners chanting anti-American slogans and carrying militia flags. This incident further illustrates the growing discontent towards the US presence in the region.
The recent US airstrikes were prompted by a drone attack from Iran-backed Hezbollah militants on a US military base in Erbil, resulting in the injury of three soldiers. President Biden's administration has emphasized the protection of American personnel and stated that further attacks will be met with decisive action.
The identity of the injured US service member has not been disclosed by the Pentagon.
This escalation of attacks against US forces in the Middle East follows the invasion of Israel by Hamas on October 7. Since then, Iran-linked militias in Iraq and Syria have carried out over 100 attacks on American troops. These attacks include drone and missile strikes by Houthi militants based in Yemen against commercial ships in the Red Sea.
Earlier this month, the US embassy in Baghdad also came under rocket fire from an unknown terror group, adding to the growing concerns over regional security.
The situation remains tense as both sides maintain their stance. The Iraqi government has stressed its commitment to addressing attacks on foreign diplomatic missions and the presence of military advisors, while the US has reiterated its determination to hold those responsible for attacks on coalition forces accountable.
As the situation unfolds, further dialogue and efforts to de-escalate tensions are urgently needed to restore stability and security in the region.
