As the holiday weekend approaches, a surprising twist awaits residents in the Midwest and South of the United States. Unseasonably warm temperatures are forecasted for various states, while others brace for potential flooding and heavy snowfall.

In Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota, record-high temperatures may be reached, with the mercury rising into the 40s and 50s. On Christmas Eve, some areas like Minneapolis, Minnesota, could witness record-breaking temperatures, with a forecast high of the middle 50s compared to the previous record of 46 degrees set in 1957. Duluth, Minnesota; Green Bay, Wisconsin; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are also likely to break high temperature records.

Christmas Day in Green Bay is expected to be near a record-high, with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees. Meanwhile, a storm system moving east is causing rain around the Great Lakes, which will turn into snowfall for upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire over the weekend. Simultaneously, the Rockies will experience snowfall, while the Desert Southwest receives rainfall.

The Great Plains will see rain spreading throughout Saturday, covering a vast region from the Dakotas to Texas. By Saturday night and into Sunday morning, flooding may occur in parts of Texas, including Dallas and Houston. The flood threat is expected to evolve and move eastwards through the South during the holiday weekend.

On Christmas morning, Florida's panhandle is at risk of flooding, along with heavy rain extending into Georgia and South Carolina throughout the day. The total rainfall accumulation along the Gulf Coast is anticipated to reach 2 to 3 inches, with some localized areas experiencing up to 4 to 5 inches.

In contrast, on the backside of the storm system, heavy snowfall is anticipated across the plains of South Dakota and Nebraska. Accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, or potentially more, are expected by the end of Tuesday in certain parts of both states. Additionally, Northern Minnesota may face issues with ice on Tuesday morning.

As the storm progresses, the rain is predicted to reach the East Coast on Tuesday and the Northeast later in the day and through Wednesday.

Residents in affected areas are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as they navigate through the unseasonable weather conditions.
