Nov 12 (Reuters) - The Pentagon announced on Sunday that the United States has carried out two air strikes in Syria targeting Iran and its aligned groups. This marks the third strike since Oct. 26 as the U.S. aims to counter a series of attacks against its forces in Syria and Iraq.
The recent strikes are part of the ongoing efforts by the United States to suppress multiple waves of drone and rocket attacks launched against American troops in both Syria and Iraq. These attacks were triggered by the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Iran and its supporters have placed blame on the United States, claiming that the country shares responsibility for Israel's declared war against Hamas. Hamas, a Palestinian militant group also backed by Iran, has been a key factor in the escalating conflict.
In recent weeks, Iran-backed forces have targeted U.S. and coalition troops at least 40 times in Iraq and Syria. As a result, 45 U.S. troops have suffered from traumatic brain injuries or minor wounds.
The United States currently has 900 troops stationed in Syria, with an additional 2,500 in neighboring Iraq. Their mission is to provide guidance and support to local forces in their efforts to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State, which had previously seized significant territory in both countries before its defeat.
The escalating Israel-Hamas conflict has raised concerns about the potential for its spread throughout the Middle East, making U.S. troops based in isolated locations vulnerable to attacks.
To address these concerns, the United States has deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on Oct. 7. This includes the presence of two aircraft carriers and an increased number of troops, reaching into the thousands, to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.
In response to the heightened attacks by suspected Iran-backed groups, the U.S. military has implemented new measures to protect its forces in the Middle East. Additionally, they are keeping open the possibility of evacuating military families if necessary, as reported by Reuters.
The United States continues to actively respond to the escalating attacks against its forces in Syria and Iraq. These airstrikes signify efforts to stabilize the situation and protect American troops and interests in the region.
