LINCOLN, Neb. - A 21-year-old Union College student tragically lost his life in a motorcycle crash involving an SUV in southeast Lincoln on Tuesday. The Lincoln Police Department has released the identity of the victim as Caleb Long, a senior in the Biomedical Program from Hutchinson, Minnesota.

According to the authorities, the incident occurred at the intersection of 70th Street and Nebraska Parkway. Preliminary investigations suggest that Long was riding his Kawasaki Ninja westbound on Nebraska Parkway when a Hyundai Tucson, driven by an unidentified individual, attempted to make a left turn from eastbound Nebraska Parkway. In the process, Long collided with the SUV.

Eyewitnesses reported that the westbound traffic had slowed down for a yellow traffic signal when Long passed between the slowing vehicles and crashed into the SUV. The accident report indicates that Long may have been operating his motorcycle in a reckless or aggressive manner.

Despite wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Long was thrown from his motorcycle upon impact. First responders arrived promptly and performed CPR, but unfortunately, Long succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Union College expressed their condolences and announced that several science classes had been canceled on Wednesday to allow students time to process the tragic loss. Additionally, a prayer vigil was scheduled to take place at 6:30 p.m. at Woods Auditorium, where the college community could come together to remember and honor Long's memory.

The driver of the SUV involved in the collision was not issued any citations by the police. Lincoln Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with any additional information that might assist in the ongoing investigation. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Lincoln Police Department at 402-441-6000.

This devastating accident serves as a reminder of the importance of cautious driving and adherence to traffic laws. The loss of Caleb Long has touched the Union College community deeply, leaving students and faculty mourning the bright life extinguished far too soon.

The Union College community is rallying together to support one another during this difficult time, offering compassion and solace as they pay tribute to their fellow student's life.
