Two Killed After Jumping Barrier into Restricted Area, Struck by MAX Train along I-84 in Portland

Portland, Oregon - Tragedy struck on Saturday night as two individuals lost their lives after being hit by a MAX train along Interstate 84 in Portland. The incident occurred following a single-vehicle crash on the Banfield Freeway (I-84), near Northeast 28th Avenue.

According to initial reports, the driver involved in the crash was traveling at a high speed when the accident occurred. The impact caused the vehicle to come to a halt near a restricted TriMet area, prompting two individuals to exit the car. Overcoming the barrier, they ventured into the restricted zone, allegedly with the intention of retrieving a car part.

Regrettably, both individuals were struck and killed by a passing MAX train while within the confines of the TriMet area. The details surrounding this incident remain under investigation by the Portland Police Traffic Division's Major Crash Team.

In response to the tragedy, the westbound lanes of I-84 were temporarily closed at Northeast 43rd Avenue. Shuttle buses were provided to transport affected MAX passengers between Northeast 7th Avenue and the Gateway Transit Center. The closure and transportation arrangements were put in place to facilitate the investigation and ensure public safety.
