SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- Scarborough police are investigating two separate fatal crashes that occurred on Payne Road over the weekend.
The first incident took place on Saturday around 12:15 p.m., when a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed veered off the road, striking a rock and a utility pole. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Sarah B. Harford of West Enfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. Harford was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Authorities were alerted to the crash when a caller reported being hit by the same vehicle on I-95. The caller managed to follow the vehicle as it exited the interstate at Exit 42 and proceeded to hit a guardrail multiple times before turning onto Payne Road at a high speed. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
Tragically, Sunday saw another fatal crash occur on the same road. At approximately 7:19 a.m., police received a report of a driving complaint on Gorham Road, with the driver reportedly heading towards Payne Road. Less than five minutes later, authorities received a separate call reporting a serious crash in the same area.
The driver involved in the second incident was identified as 38-year-old Megan M. Plowden of Abbeville, Louisiana. Plowden sustained serious injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Like the previous crash, Plowden was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the second crash and the investigation remains ongoing.
These tragic incidents highlight the importance of vigilance on the road and the need for drivers to exercise caution at all times. Payne Road has become the site of two fatal accidents in as many days, prompting local officials to reevaluate safety measures in the area.
Anyone with information regarding either incident is urged to contact the Scarborough Police Department as they work to piece together the events leading up to these devastating crashes.
