In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, two people were killed and four others were injured in a shooting at a suspected speakeasy in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Police Department responded to a report of a person with a gun on Myrtlewood Street around 12:50 a.m., where the shooter or shooters fired into a residence from the street.

According to the police, the victims were found inside the residence. A 53-year-old man, who suffered a gunshot wound to the face, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man, aged 41, was shot multiple times in the chest and was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.

In addition to the fatalities, four other victims, aged between 23 and 42, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently in stable condition at nearby hospitals, as per the information provided in the police's news release.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the targeted residence was operating as a speakeasy, but the police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the shooting. The motives behind the incident remain unknown at this time.

This incident marks the latest in a series of mass shootings across the United States since the beginning of the year. According to the Gun Violence Archive, Sunday's shooting joins a list of nine mass shootings reported in the past two weeks. It is important to note that both CNN and GVA define a mass shooting as an incident that involves four or more individuals being injured or killed, excluding the shooter.

The recent surge in gun violence has prompted Mayor Cherelle Parker, who was sworn into office earlier this month, to declare a public safety emergency in Philadelphia. In response to the "aberrant and unacceptable levels of violent crime" in the city, the executive order calls for increased police presence and the development of an action plan to address the ongoing violence.

As the investigation into the Philadelphia shooting continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the pressing need for comprehensive measures to address gun violence and ensure the safety of communities across the nation.
