Two arrests have been made following the theft of a road sign featuring the work of renowned street artist Banksy. The piece of art, a red stop sign adorned with three military drones, had been unveiled on Friday in Commercial Way, Peckham, London.
The artwork had been authenticated by Banksy himself, who has maintained an anonymous identity and operated under the cover of darkness for years. A photograph of the piece was uploaded to his social media account, confirming its legitimacy.
However, on Saturday, a man in his twenties was caught on camera removing the sign with boltcutters before making off with it. In a video captured by onlookers, the man was seen cutting the sign off its post while another person held his bike. The individual was subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft and criminal damage.
"We are aware of footage being shared which shows the sign being removed," confirmed the police.
In a recent update, the BBC has reported that a second man, in his forties, has also been arrested on suspicion of the same offenses.
The artwork has been interpreted as Banksy's call for peace and a ceasefire in Gaza. This theme is not new to the artist, as similar works featuring drones have previously appeared in Banksy's hotel in Bethlehem.
The stolen artwork has sparked outrage in the local community and among art enthusiasts who had admired Banksy's thought-provoking message. Investigations are underway to recover the stolen piece and ensure justice is served.
This incident once again highlights the intriguing enigma surrounding Banksy and his impact on contemporary art. As the search for the stolen artwork continues, supporters and admirers eagerly await the resolution of this peculiar and captivating case.
