In what feels like an eternity since the last snowfall, the Twin Cities of Minnesota are set to receive their first measurable snow in almost four weeks. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a clipper system passing through Iowa is likely to bring snow across much of southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities late Wednesday into Wednesday night.

Previously, the weather forecast models had predicted the system to move further south, but recent adjustments show it shifting northward, increasing the chances of accumulating snow in the Twin Cities area. Winter weather advisories have been issued for southwestern Minnesota and the southern Twin Cities counties, beginning from Wednesday evening.

The updated information from the National Weather Service states that snow is expected to accumulate to a total of 3 to 4 inches. The impacted regions include east central, south central, and southeast Minnesota, as well as west central Wisconsin. The snowfall is anticipated to start around midday on Wednesday in southwestern Minnesota, reaching the Twin Cities by late afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall predicted for Wednesday evening.

While the exact position of a potential narrow band of higher snowfall amounts within the system remains uncertain, road conditions are expected to become slippery, potentially impacting the Thursday morning commute. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and prepare for hazardous driving conditions.

The snowfall is expected to taper off during the early hours of Thursday morning, moving from west to east. Although model forecasts suggest the heaviest snow will primarily affect areas south of the Twin Cities, a zone of 3 to 5 inches is likely across southern Minnesota. The northward shift in the system indicates that much of the Twin Cities region could receive a coating of snow up to 3 inches in many areas. The southern Twin Cities, including Scott and Dakota counties, stand the best chance of seeing a snowfall of 3 to 4 inches.

As Minnesotans gear up for the long-awaited snow event, residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions for travel.
