Turkey Recalls Ambassador from Israel in Protest Against Gaza Attacks

In a strong statement of condemnation, Turkey has recalled its ambassador to Israel, joining other regional states in protest against the Israeli government's relentless bombardment of Gaza. The decision comes as Turkey cites the "humanitarian tragedy" unfolding in Gaza and Israel's refusal to heed calls for a ceasefire.
Adding its voice to Bahrain and Jordan, Turkey's decision to recall its ambassador represents a united front against the Israeli government's actions, especially in the wake of Hamas' cross-border attack on October 7th. This move underscores growing international discontent and mounting pressure on Israel to cease the violence.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan severed ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, "Netanyahu is no longer someone we can talk to. We have written him off." Erdogan's remarks indicate the dismay felt by Turkey over the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
While Turkey's decision is a significant step in distancing itself from Israel, it does not amount to a complete severing of diplomatic relations between the countries. Erdogan acknowledged that complete disconnection is not achievable, particularly in international diplomacy, but asserted that Netanyahu bears the primary responsibility for the violence.
Israel's ambassador to Ankara, Irit Lillian, had already left Turkey in October due to concerns raised by Israel's National Security Council about the safety of Israelis traveling to Turkey. The fear was that they could become targets of protesters.
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "In view of the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Gaza caused by the continuing attacks by Israel against civilians and Israel's refusal of calls for a ceasefire and continuous and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, it was decided to recall our Ambassador in Tel Aviv, H.E. Mr. Sakir Ozkan Torunlar, to Ankara for consultations."
This move by Turkey closely coincides with Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to the region. In response to the escalating crisis, Blinken stated that his goals in Turkey include emphasizing the need to protect civilian lives in both Israel and Gaza, as well as providing humanitarian assistance.
As the international community intensifies its efforts to bring an end to the violence and alleviate the suffering in Gaza, Turkey's recall of its ambassador further amplifies the global call for a ceasefire and the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach those affected by the conflict.
