In a recent operation, Turkish authorities have detained at least 29 individuals believed to have connections to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as ISIS. The arrests were made as part of "Operation Heroes-37", a drive by Turkey's security forces ahead of the New Year festivities, but some analysts suggest it may also be motivated by the upcoming local elections in March.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya took to social media platform X to announce that the arrests had effectively foiled planned attacks on churches and synagogues in Istanbul. Among the detained suspects were three alleged senior ISIL fighters, with their plans reportedly involving an attack on the Iraqi Embassy in Ankara, according to Turkish state news agency Anadolu.

Despite the diminishing strength of ISIL, remnants of the terrorist group are still hiding in remote regions of Syria and Iraq, from where they continue to launch attacks. Turkey, which has experienced a series of deadly bombings in the past, remains a target for such incidents.

This latest operation comes in the wake of a previous security sweep conducted before New Year's Eve, where 304 suspected ISIL fighters were apprehended in simultaneous raids across Turkey. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the public during the festive period.

Notably, Turkish authorities have also intensified their actions against Kurdish fighters in recent weeks following a bombing near government buildings in Ankara on October 1. The government's increasing operations against both Kurdish and ISIL issues indicate a commitment to maintaining national security.

Analysts have also noted that the upcoming local elections in March hold significance for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who seeks to regain control of key economic hubs such as Istanbul and Ankara, both of which were lost by his AK Party. The timing of these security operations coinciding with the election period has raised suspicion among some observers, who view it as a political move.

As Turkey intensifies its efforts to combat domestic and international terrorism, the detentions in "Operation Heroes-37" serve as a reminder of the ongoing threat faced by the country. With New Year festivities approaching, heightened security measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of the public. The authorities' determination to tackle these challenges will continue to be crucial in safeguarding Turkey's security and stability.
