In a campaign event held in Sioux Center, Iowa on Friday, former President Donald Trump addressed the recent shooting at a high school in Perry, Iowa, urging the audience to "get over it" and move forward. The shooting, which occurred just 36 hours prior, claimed the life of one sixth grader and left seven others injured.

Initially offering sympathy and emotional support for the victims and their families, Trump's comments about moving past the tragedy sparked criticism from the Democratic Super Pac American Bridge. The organization's communication director, Brandon Weathersby, stated that while already lacking empathy, Trump's statement went beyond the boundaries of acceptability.

This was not the first instance in which Trump attempted to deflect from discussions about gun violence. During a speech to the National Rifle Association in April 2023, he argued that the issue of deadly school shootings in the United States is "not a gun problem," but blamed it on various factors such as Democrats, mental health issues, marijuana, and the transgender community.

Despite facing multiple legal challenges, including 91 criminal charges, Trump continues his campaign for a second presidency. He is currently leading in polling for the Republican presidential nomination, with several campaign stops scheduled in Iowa ahead of the Republican primary caucuses on January 15th.

The shooting in Perry was carried out by a 17-year-old student who attended the targeted high school. The assailant died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as confirmed by the police. Authorities also discovered an improvised explosive device during a search of the school in response to the shooting.

Among the wounded were four students, two faculty members, and the principal, who is reportedly in critical condition but not facing life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred on the first day back to school after the students' holiday break, sending shockwaves across the community and prompting discussions about school safety.

As the Perry community mourns the loss of a young life and rallies around those injured, the call for meaningful action on gun violence continues to resonate. Trump's dismissive remarks have further fueled the debate surrounding his stance on the issue, leaving many to question his empathy and compassion for those affected by such tragedies.
