Former President Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by accusing President Joe Biden of overseeing a Soviet-style persecution of Catholics and alleging that FBI undercover spies are preparing to infiltrate churches. In a video posted to Truth Social on Thursday, Trump claimed that Christians and Americans of faith, particularly Catholics, are being targeted under the Biden administration. However, these allegations have been strongly refuted by both the Justice Department and the FBI.
Trump's video address aimed at undermining Biden's credibility as a practicing Catholic, who is only the second Catholic president after JFK. He claimed that under "Crooked Joe Biden," Christians and people of faith in America are experiencing unprecedented persecution. Trump specifically highlighted the treatment of Catholics and suggested that evangelicals are also on a watch list.
The former president pointed to supposed actions taken by the Biden administration, such as SWAT teams arresting pro-life activists over the past three years. However, it should be noted that these allegations of arrests may be based on a false narrative created by conservatives, as reported by HuffPost in 2022.
Trump's most alarming claim was that the FBI had been profiling devout Catholics as potential domestic terrorists and planning to send undercover spies into Catholic churches. This assertion came after the leaked memo titled "Interest of Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists in Radical-Traditionalist Catholic Ideology Almost Certainly Presents New Mitigation Opportunities." However, the Justice Department swiftly refuted these allegations, with Attorney General Merrick Garland calling them "outrageous" and expressing his appallment at the memo. The FBI clarified to Newsweek that any suggestion of targeting Catholics as domestic terrorists was false.
In his video plea, Trump urged Catholics not to vote for Biden or any other Democrat. He promised to form a task force to combat what he referred to as "anti-Christian bias" and investigate government agencies, universities, and major corporations that have implemented anti-Christian diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
This isn't the first time Trump has expressed disappointment with his performance among Catholic voters. In 2021, he acknowledged losing support from the Catholic community during the 2020 election, despite his claims of having done a lot for them. Trump expressed optimism about making a comeback in the future.
The baseless accusations made by Trump against the Biden administration regarding the persecution of Catholics have been met with strong condemnation. As the nation continues to grapple with issues of faith and religious freedom, it is imperative to separate fact from fiction and ensure that accurate information prevails in public discourse.
