Former President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Michigan Democrat Representative Debbie Dingell after she criticized his Christmas Day messages. Dingell appeared on CNN and called Trump's message "pathetic" and accused him of adding to the "divisiveness" in the United States.
Trump retaliated on his newly launched social media platform, Truth Social, referring to Dingell as a "LOSER" who is supporting President Joe Biden and his "Merry Band of Thugs". He also brought up Dingell's late husband, former Representative John Dingell, claiming that he gave him "the absolute highest US honors for his funeral".
John Dingell, who served in Congress for 59 years, was the longest-serving lawmaker in US history. He passed away in 2019 during Trump's presidency and was eulogized by former President Bill Clinton as "just about the best doer in the history of American public life".
In his response, Trump stated that after he honored John Dingell, Debbie Dingell called him in tears, thanking him for his gesture. However, according to Trump, she later returned to the campaign trail, criticizing him once again. Trump suggested that Dingell should "focus on how badly the Auto Workers of Michigan, and the USA as a whole, are being treated by CHINA".
This is not the first time Trump and Dingell have clashed. In 2019, Dingell voted in favor of Trump's impeachment, prompting him to suggest that her late husband was "looking up" from hell. Dingell responded on Twitter, expressing her hurt and stating that Trump's words made her healing process much harder.
Trump's Christmas Day message on Truth Social included a video compilation of his past presidential speeches and a greeting that his opponents should "rot in hell". Alongside accusations against President Joe Biden and a list of issues, Trump wished "Merry Christmas to all".
The feud between Trump and Dingell is yet another example of the ongoing political divisions in the United States. As the former president continues to use his social media presence to attack his critics, it remains to be seen how this latest dispute will further impact the already polarized political landscape.
In response to Trump's remarks, Dingell has not yet issued a statement. As the news of their latest clash spreads, it is likely to generate further debate and reactions from political figures across the country.
