Late Friday morning, an incident on Interstate 70 at the Highway C470 exit caused significant traffic delays as a truck became wedged under a bridge in the westbound lanes. The closure, which lasted for several hours, disrupted the flow of traffic until just after 4 p.m.
A camera from the Colorado Department of Transportation captured footage of the truck with its front protruding from under the bridge. Crews immediately arrived at the scene to assess both the truck and the bridge for any signs of damage.
Following the crash, which occurred just after 11 a.m., the westbound lanes were completely shut down to ensure public safety. The Colorado State Patrol later shared visuals depicting the extent of the damage caused to the truck's load. However, the severity of damage to the underside of the bridge remains unknown at this time.
Throughout early Friday afternoon, the closure at mile marker 260 persisted as the oversized load remained wedged under the bridge. To alleviate some of the traffic congestion, vehicles were diverted to C470. Fortunately, all westbound lanes of I-70 were able to reopen to motorists shortly after 4 p.m., facilitating the resumption of normal traffic flow.
Before 3 p.m., state troopers announced through a tweet that the oversized load had been successfully removed from the road, signaling progress in resolving the situation. Meanwhile, inspection crews diligently evaluated the bridge for "traffic worthiness," and repairs were scheduled for the road due to the dragging of the load during its removal.
Thankfully, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the truck becoming stuck under the bridge. The incident served as a reminder of the importance of ensuring proper vehicle clearance when traversing under bridges and overpasses.
As traffic gradually returned to normal on Interstate 70, commuters expressed relief and gratitude for the swift resolution of the incident.
