In a devastating incident that occurred at Harni Lake in Vadodara, India, a boat carrying over two dozen passengers, despite its intended capacity of only 16 people, tragically capsized on Thursday. The picnic event, organized by a private school, turned into a scene of horror as at least 15 students and one teacher lost their lives.

According to The Indian Express, the heartbreaking incident took place during late afternoon hours. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel of Gujarat state expressed his condolences, stating, "The incident of children drowning after the boat capsized in Vadodara's Harni lake is extremely heartbreaking. I pray for the peace of the souls of the innocent children who lost their lives."

Amidst the chaos, eleven students were fortunate enough to be rescued when the boat sank. Vehement efforts to locate one missing person were underway, as Vadodara fire officer Jitu Parmar confirmed. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Reports suggest that the victims included three students – a 15-year-old boy, and two 15-year-old girls – as shared by a local hospital to The Indian Express. Authorities revealed that the children were equipped with life jackets. However, it was discovered that the boat was overloaded, with 24 people on board, exceeding its recommended capacity.

As news of the tragedy spread, local residents sprang into action and mounted a rescue operation. They managed to save some children before first responders could reach the scene, as reported by India TV.

This devastating incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and regulations. As investigations continue, authorities will strive to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of young lives during what should have been a joyful school outing.
