California State Senate Pro Tempore Toni Atkins has officially thrown her hat into the ring for the 2026 California governor election, announcing her candidacy at a campaign rally held in San Diego on Friday morning. Just hours before the announcement, Atkins filed the necessary paperwork to enter the race, seeking to replace Governor Gavin Newsom whose term will end in 2026.
At the rally, Atkins emphasized her deep understanding of the challenges faced by Californians who are struggling to make ends meet and striving to achieve upward mobility. She expressed her readiness to take on the responsibility of leading the state as governor, stating, "In 2026, we have the opportunity to elect a Governor who understands, and has lived, the challenges facing Californians struggling to get by and trying to get ahead. I am ready to be Governor."
Recognized as a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community, Atkins made history as the first lesbian to lead both the State Senate and Assembly. In a significant milestone, she became the first LGBTQ community member to sign legislation while temporarily fulfilling the duties of the governor in the past, honoring the passing of San Diego Padres baseball player Tony Gwynn.
Notably, Atkins played a key role in securing the right to abortion in California with a constitutional amendment, which was approved by voters in 2022. She was also instrumental in ending the LGBTQ travel ban in the state, replacing it with the BRIDGE Project, a fund dedicated to promoting LGBTQ communities nationwide.
The announcement of Atkins' candidacy came as no surprise to insiders in the state Capitol, as speculation had been circulating for months. In 2023, Atkins had previously announced she would step down as the State Senate's top leader, and State Sen. Mike McGuire was elected to succeed her.
Atkins joins a growing field of candidates for the 2026 governor race, including Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, who was the first to formally announce her bid during Newsom's second term. Tony Thurmond, the African American state superintendent of public instruction, and former Controller Betty Yee have also entered the race. Additionally, Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is of Filipino descent, has expressed serious consideration of joining the race.
Notably, California has never elected a woman as governor. The 2026 election presents an opportunity for Californians to make history by electing Toni Atkins as the state's first female governor. With her extensive experience in state leadership and her advocacy for marginalized communities, Atkins seeks to bring her unique perspective and drive for positive change to the highest office in California.
As the 2026 election approaches, this diverse field of candidates will surely engage in a spirited campaign to win the support of Californians and shape the state's future.
