Three people have tragically lost their lives and over a dozen others were injured in a devastating fire that rapidly consumed a three-story apartment building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The fast-moving blaze broke out early Sunday morning, leaving first responders facing a challenging and dangerous operation to rescue residents. The fire, which quickly spread across all three floors of the residence, prompted a three-alarm response from the FDNY.
The victims, all belonging to the same family, were rushed to the hospital with critical injuries. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save them, all three individuals were pronounced dead on Sunday. Fire officials have not released the names of the victims at this time. However, neighbors in the community identified them as Ms. West, her son Mike, and her grandson Jamal. Housing records confirm that the address was home to Albertha West, 81, Michael West, 58, and Jamiyl West, 33.
In addition to the fatalities, at least 14 other individuals suffered various injuries as a result of the immense fire. The operation to extinguish the flames and conduct searches on the affected floors was a time-consuming and perilous task for the firefighters, according to Chief of Fire Operations John Esposito. He emphasized the challenges faced when dealing with multiple floors engulfed in heavy flames. However, their swift response helped prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings, which Mayor Eric Adams described as a "miracle."
Eyewitnesses shared their harrowing experiences as they woke up to the sight of thick smoke and flames. Jason Thompson, a neighbor, recounted how he quickly alerted his family and ushered them to safety. Thompson described the devastating scene when he witnessed the burnt victims being transported on stretchers, expressing that they "looked like barbeque." The Thompsons were fortunate to escape unharmed, but the tragic loss of the neighboring family, who were beloved members of the community, deeply saddened everyone.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, and firefighters are working to determine the factors that contributed to its rapid spread. The FDNY responded to the emergency within three minutes and 20 seconds, demonstrating their promptness in addressing the situation. By 6:32 a.m., the fire was under control.
This unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of fires and the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings. It also highlights the bravery and dedication of the firefighters who risked their lives to save others. As the community mourns the loss of three precious lives, they will undoubtedly rally together to support those affected by this tragedy.
