Geneva, 31 October 2023 - The Gaza Strip has turned into a heartbreaking burial ground for thousands of innocent children as the hostilities in the region continue unabated. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has been tirelessly advocating for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to stem the alarming loss of young lives and ensure the delivery of vital aid and the release of abducted children.

The harrowing reality has surpassed early fears, with the reported death toll of children escalating from several dozen to hundreds, and now exceeding a devastating count of over 3,450, and rising exponentially each passing day.

The situation in Gaza has deteriorated to an unimaginable extent, as thousands of children are laid to rest in what has now become their haunting final resting place. While the impact on children is the most severe, the conflict-infested region has become a living nightmare for all its inhabitants.

Beyond the relentless barrage of bombs and mortars, Gaza's children are also grappling with a severe water crisis. The region's water production capacity stands at a mere 5 percent of its usual output, leaving over a million children at risk of dehydration and associated fatalities.

One UNICEF staff member, Nesma, currently living and working in Gaza, has expressed her anguish over witnessing children desperately seeking clean water. Nesma's own children, 4-year-old Talia and 7-year-old Zain, long for a basic necessity as their health deteriorates due to the only available option being salty, contaminated water, which is making countless children sick.

Adding to the already dire situation is the psychological trauma inflicted upon children. Even after the fighting ceases, the profound emotional scars on children and their communities will persist for generations. Prior to the recent escalation, a staggering 800,000 children in Gaza, representing three-quarters of the child population, were in dire need of mental health and psychosocial support. This figure does not even account for the current nightmarish realities.

Nesma, the courageous UNICEF employee in Gaza, shares the heartbreaking tale of her 4-year-old daughter, Talia, who exhibits severe symptoms of stress and fear. Talia has resorted to self-harming behaviors, such as tearing at her hair and scratching her thighs until they bleed. Nesma, consumed by the survival instinct, acknowledges the urgent need for mental support and medical care for her children, once a semblance of peace is restored.

In light of these distressing circumstances, UNICEF appeals urgently on behalf of Talia, Zain, and the 1.1 million children in Gaza trapped in this endless nightmare. An immediate humanitarian ceasefire is paramount to alleviate the suffering, and all access crossings into Gaza must be swiftly opened to ensure the safe and unimpeded delivery of essential humanitarian aid, including water, food, medical supplies, and fuel.

Should the call for a ceasefire go unanswered, leaving the children of Gaza without access to clean water, vital medicine, and the release of abducted children, the consequences will undoubtedly lead to even greater horrors befalling these innocent young souls. The international community stands at the precipice of allowing an unconscionable tragedy to unfold, as the plea for decisive action echoes throughout the ravaged streets of Gaza.
