In a tragic turn of events, a third teenager has succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent single-vehicle crash that occurred on Boston's Morrissey Boulevard last week. Massachusetts State Police confirmed the death of a 17-year-old from Roslindale earlier this week at a Boston hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to three.
The incident took place on January 4th at 3:17 a.m., when a stolen silver Hyundai was traveling at a high rate of speed on Morrissey Boulevard before crashing and rolling over. Tragically, a 14-year-old from Dorchester and a 15-year-old from Mattapan lost their lives in the accident.
While the names of the deceased teenagers have not been released, authorities have disclosed that a fourth teen, a 15-year-old from Dorchester, is expected to survive.
During the investigation, troopers discovered a firearm inside the stolen vehicle, adding another layer of complexity to the case. The crash, along with the actions of Boston police leading up to it, remain under investigation.
In response to the incident, Mayor Michelle Wu confirmed that the city is examining whether officers followed appropriate protocol in their pursuit of the stolen car. Audio recordings from that morning indicated that the vehicle had been pursued by police. However, dispatch transmissions revealed that the chase was ultimately called off by supervisors.
Surveillance footage obtained by WCVB offers a glimpse into the moments prior to the crash, showing the stolen car driving on Morrissey Boulevard with several police cruisers behind it, their blue lights activated.
Wu emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events and said, "In situations like this where it's unclear from the audio and other information that is immediately available, there's a deeper investigation that goes to look at all - every facet of that and put it together."
The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office confirmed that charges stemming from the crash may be possible for the surviving occupant of the stolen vehicle. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of these young lives and awaits answers surrounding the circumstances of the tragic incident on Morrissey Boulevard.
